He made a name for himself in his native Brazil, at GrĂªmio, where he won three state championships, two Brazilian Cups, one Brazilian Championship and one Copa Libertadores da America, but eventually losing the Intercontinental Cup on the penalty kicks to Ajax; before going to Europe to play for Bayer Leverkusen.
